1) How do I pay you for Services Rendered?

There are four ways to pay: Time, Materials & Equipment, Fixed Contract, Fixed Percentage of Contract and Retainer.

2) What is the most common way to pay for services rendered?

Most clients select time, materials, and equipment for their first project with the firm. This is also the most popular method of billing for research, mediation, arbitration, expert witness testimony, court/law firm work, survey work, inspection, and investigative reports.

3) When would I use the Other Methods of Payment?

Fixed Contract is used for reports, contract writing, teaching, project management, business and marketing plans, and equipment acquisition. This is a negotiated lump sum fee for the work.

Fixed Percentage of Contract is used for project management or administration. It is often written into the construction contract as a fixed percentage fee that is payable to the consulting firm by the contractor. This method keeps the consultants fee in balance with the low bid and eliminates the need for extensive owner involvement.

Retainer fixed monthly fee is used a variety of services rendered throughout the month and is usually negotiated on a yearly basis; it contracts that the consultant is "on standby" for services.

4) What can I expect to pay in dollars for various services?

Hourly Rates*

Principal

$120 per hour

Research Engineer

$75 per hour

Engineering Technician

$40 - $60 per hour

Support Staff

$28 per hour

Survey Crew (2)

$70 per hour

* subject to change

Average Value Examples:

a) A law firm requires A REPORT on a set of steps that a client tripped on. Do they meet code? Are they unsafe? A survey crew will be dispatched. Elevations are taken and plotted by an Engineering Technician. Data is then provided to a senior Engineering Technician who will write an initial report. This report will have a cover letter written by The Principal.  Value of the work: 8 hours for survey @ $70, 2 hours Eng. Tech. @ $40, 2 hours Eng Tech @ $60, 2 hrs Principal @ $120 = $1,000

b) A client needs a PROJECT MANAGED from start to completion. The fee will vary from 10% minimum to 28%. The fee depends on complexity and portion of initial budget and the amount saved by the consultant through efficiency of management. A $100,000 simple one site project fee could be as low as $10,000.

c) A REPORT is required on the condition of the infrastructure of a parkade.  Based on a qualified estimate of the number of hours the report should take, an agreed contract value of $2,000 is decided prior to report start

d) A general contractor client wishes to retain the firm to confidentially verify all project bids over $1 million to ensure there is no gross error. A monthly retainer fee of $4,000 is agreed upon based on an estimated yearly number of bids to be proofed of 24

5) Consultants seem expensive?

No!  CONSULTANTS WILL SAVE YOU MONEY, usually many times over. Let's look at the work examples below to see how they relate to the above sections on Average Values.

Survey & Engineering Opinion Report for Law Firm

In example (A) above, the law firm will have the objective data it needs to determine that either their client has a weak case or a strong case and can so advise. This example happens top be a real world case. The sidewalk did not meet code, the plaintiff won the case.

Management for a Construction Project

Ever done any work around the house with tradesmen? Ever had even the simplest home renovation project come in on time and on budget? Imagine what can and will go wrong on real construction and engineering projects with numerous trades. The project management fee from any consultant will be the best value expenditure of the project.

Infrastructure Condition Report

Do you know how to determine the condition of concrete. Do you have the experience, the test equipment, and the education to make accurate determinations? Do you know what is the best and most economical method for repair? When should the work be done for the optimum cost to benefit. The consultant report will save you time and money.

Estimate for a Retainer Client

A quantum error is found in Bid #23. The project is worth $84 million. The estimator has assumed materials are available in Canada; in fact, materials must come from a single source California supplier; the error value is $3.5 million. REMEMBER competent, qualified consultants are your best investment for saving money on any Construction Project.
